30 Scandinavian Home Desks

Have a look at these lovely home desks designed in a faultless Scandinavian style! Freshome thought of gathering a collection of 30 less conventional home offices that could make work less rigid and more inviting. With a splash of color here and there, colorful wallpapers and chairs, appealing picture frames or intriguing looking lamps, each and anyone of you can turn your home desk into a welcoming working space. The photos below feature some amazing decors, each of them different and with a well defined personality. As you can observe, most of the desks are situated in isolated parts of the apartments, such as corners, small attic spaces or alcoves. A window nearby is always a good idea to consider. The working tables are unconventional, some of them having a vintage style. Calendars, flowers, post-its with messages from friends, a good book-these are small details that can turn a dull desk into an appealing and creative space to work.

Boet Stools - Note Design Studio

Description from the designers:
This is Boet (meaning Nest in Swedish), a stool inspired by the birds’ home among the trees. Elevated, protected, carried by a strong tree, you find the soft, rounded shape of the nest.
The contrast between materials with different functions creates dynamics. Metal in different colors signal strength and tone. In the metal bowl a soft shape of cork to sit on, warm and welcoming. The nest always feels like home.
In connection with our design concept for Johan & Nystrom’s new showroom in Helsinki, we needed a stool with strong character for the café in a high and a low model. The old port warehouse, where the café is located, is sturdy and heavy in brick and rough wooden beams. With this we have furnished with lots of color and a mix of unexpected materials, where Boet has a natural place.
Boet will be shown for the first time at the COUPLICITE exhibition during Maison et Objet in Paris 2011.

NY Public Library - Lewis Wickes Hines

Always an amazing place to look for photographs of eras past, the NYPL Digital Gallery featured a collection of photographs by Lewis Wickes Hines of working conditions in the first half of the 1900′s. I like the contrast between the shapes of the munitions storehouse and the weaving loom. This collection is 500+ photographs, so take a browse around.

The Art of Flight

Travis Rice's use of the word epic to describe his new snowboarding film "The Art of Flight" barely does the powder-crushing tour de force credit. The Herculean adventure, captured by the same type of Cineflex cameras used to film Planet Earth, shows Rice and his handpicked crew as they snowboard some of the wildest terrain around the globe.

Villa Remshagen - Carl Johan Smedshammar

Villa Remshagen was designed by Carl-Johan Smedshammar in collaboration with Andres Holmberg Architects and is located in Vallentuna, Sweden. The residence is surrounded by oak trees and sits atop of a small hill, with views to a nearby lake. The exterior of the house is quite appealing, displaying a simple, yet charming geometry. When inside, a wide hallway leads the way while separating the social parts from the sleeping areas. The interiors are spacious and airy, featuring interesting decorative details. We particularly like the giant bookcase with plenty of integrated storage space which gives a nice, warm feel to the whole room. The project also features an outdoor terrace, that is perfect for meditating or for having people over for a drink.

Mallorca Country House - Mestre Paco

In a place where summers are hot and bright and winters are mild and the Mediterranean Sea is close enough to feel the breeze on your skin, a beautiful house can only enhance the feelings of relaxation and contentment. This Mediterranean villa was designed by Mestre Paco and it reveals the concept of living without borders in a natural, comfortable environment. The stone facade, punctuated by wooden shutters, creates a picture-perfect exterior, accentuated by the use of simple patio furniture in the garden. Interior spaces are defined by the white beams hovering over the serene arrangements accentuated by natural stone walls. The existing flooring at the entrance and living room is used as a way to detach the interior design from over-exposure to modern design and keep the balance of the overall look. A raised dining area, separated from the living room by a creative shelving system shelters the owners’ meal times from distractions. Salvaged items and industrial elements found their place in a house that displays a melting pot of styles. This fascinating interior design leaves you wanting more and creates a few new ideas for anyone looking for inspiration.

Hotelito - Mexican Modernism

Relaxed exclusion and a warm welcome at this colourful, architect-designed boutique B&B, a showcase for Mexican Modernism. With its strong angular lines and contrasting hues - think cobalt next to crimson and lavender and fuchsia - someone might think The Hotelito would be a hard-edged, over-designed sort of a place. But renowned British interior designer Jenny Armit, who arrived here via Spain and LA, has created a haven of harmony and tranquility in this intimate inn. Striking Modernist style buildings are set amongst tropical plantings, and filled with beautiful design touches.

Hélène Binet - architecture photographs

For the last twenty years, swiss artist Hélène Binet has captured the works of contemporary architects including: David Chipperfield, Coop Himmelblau, Daniel Libeskind, Sauerbruch Hutton and Peter Zumthor. In the language of photography binet reflects her own notion and interpretation of the building, resulting in her work separating itself from pure documentation to a work of art. Through her imagery, she lets light and shade take effect, seizes walls and openings, corners and curves, to express through the use of her camera, her personal point of view.

Located in Québec, Canada, La Cornette by yh2 Architecture has a roofline that mimics the slope of a small hill on which it is built. Modeled on traditional Quebec houses of old that lodged large families and their relatives, the protruding roof line creates a nice shaded area and some privacy.

House Costa Brava - Marta Esteve

A home in the town of Cadaques on Costa Brava in Spain caught our attention today. The fascinating use of natural colors throughout the house creates an inviting ambiance that links the interior spaces to the inspiring outdoors. Spanish interior designer Marta Esteve was the mastermind behind this interior transformation we found on MiCasaRevista. She used every resource available to create a specific charm for this two-storey residence. A natural colour palette and modern furnishings create a chic atmosphere in this summer house. Besides working as the interior decorator, Marta Esteve also designed some key pieces seen inside: the fireplace in the living room and the bed’s headboard in the master bedroom, which extends into the shaped end tables. Fascinating views over the water exploit the natural surroundings in a successful attempt to connect the interior design to the surrounding landscape. Cosiness and comfort are the two defining characteristics of this home. Glass windows and insertions help create a seamless design that blurs the lines between the inside and the outside.

House in banzão, Portugal - FVArquitectos

Portuguese firm FVArquitectos has completed 'house in banzão', a single family residence located in Colares, Portugal.

Series of pitched roofs rise above the low vegetation while a stand of pine trees surrounding the dwelling provides textured backdrop accentuating the sharp angles of the zigzag profile. the third gable is truncated at the midpoint to reveal  an entry that is visually concealed from the main approach.

Horizontal wooden slats indicate the vehicular entry point while the weathered texture contrasts and softens the consistent exterior
plaster finish. skylights with translucent glass provide ambient lighting to the minimalist spaces and corridors. The shower contains a
glass exterior door which can be opened to provide dwellers with an immediate connection to an enclosed courtyard of plantings.

Aerial photographs - Stephan Zirwes

Offering a whole new perspective on both natural and man made settings, Stuttgart-based photographer stephan zirwes's aerial images is an extensive series that illustrate an otherwise unseen phenomenon of texture and pattern that could only be observed from above. rendered abstract in its composition and vantage point, the photographs range from airfields to cultured lands; from dense crowds to a lone skier on a mountainside. very often, the result is an image that depicts the gravity of isolation, showing the vastness of an environment but at a scale that is still discernible to the viewers.
