Hollywood Hills Residence

This imposing residence was designed by Michael Parks and is located in the Laurel Canyon section of Los Angeles’ Hollywood Hills. There is an interesting story about this residence which makes it stand out as a testament to forward-thinking, sleek, open, airy and inviting modern architecture. After seeing a few architecture plans that were above his budget and with a good contractor on board, Parks decided to remodel the house for himself. I think he did a great job for this 'not so hollywood' residence on the hills. He kept the design luxurous, however simplicity and integration with surrounding enviroment stands out.

The Peaks View residence - Carney Logan Burke

The Peaks View residence was designed by Carney Logan Burke and is located near Wilson, Wyoming, within a fascinating natural environment, close to the mountains. With two major objectives in mind- of creating a home that would integrate well in its environment, but one that would also answer the modern living needs of the owners- the architects envisioned a residence with quite a few original characteristics. The interiors combine the coziness of a mountain home with contemporary details, leading to charming and inviting interiors.

Tan Residence - Chrystalline Architect

Tan Residence was designed by Chrystalline Artchitect and is located in Jakarta, Indonesia. The main goals when developing the project were to ensure a large amount of natural light and good air circulation throughout the residence. There are many elements that contributed to these two major objectives which were cleverly achieved. According to the architects,  the house opens up in the back towards a large garden, which ensures the refreshment and privacy that the owner needs. Here is more about the inner structure of the project from the architects: “The vertical circulation towards the upper level of the house is in the form of a cantilever stair with frameless glass railings, which is positioned right next to the living room. This creates a sense of unity within the main room and the upper level. In the upper floor, a connecting bridge is located between the master bedroom, children’s bedroom and study room. This bridge transverse right in the middle of the void, therefore the activities of the owner could be seen whether in the living room, dining room, study room or master bedroom.”

Knot - Apollo Architects

At first, this building seems ostensibly industrial, as if there was a mechanical pencil factory inside its exposed concrete walls. However, the interior of Knot, a 100m2 residence by Japanese-based Apollo Architects, is an amalgamation of clean materials with an exuberant amount of natural lighting, and beautiful pieces of mid-century classics. Located in Meguro, Japan, the home is perched on a small hill in a quiet neighborhood.

Reinventing Swedish furniture

Johanna Westin, Lisa Frode and Emma Nilsson are on a mission to bring back the traditional kitchen sofa. They created a kitchen sofa that offers the same functions as the traditional one but has been adapted to our modern way of life.

Seat storage has been divided into two parts making it easy to reach and organize the content. Since many homes today have an open floor plan, the back of the sofa provides storage for books, newspapers or magazines. It is made of locally-produced Swedish pine with small elm details.

Hof House -Studio Granda

Looking more like the structure was planted and growing from the surface, rather than built there, The Hof House by Studio Granda is the perfect example of architecture respecting the surroundings. The unit seems to blend perfectly with the landscape and the correct choice in materials makes all this possible. The green roof creates a “mirage” effect against the mountains, almost like an invisible cloak of sorts.

'String Lattice' by Japanese Craft Design inc.

'string lattice' developed by japanese architecture studio, craft design inc.  is a hand-crafted facade application for a multi-use structure,  housing a gallery in the front and hat atelier in the back.

The design, considering its context and surrounding environment, is a direct response to the subtlety of its community. The owners omitted traditional signage, allowing the strings to become the shops' identity. I love the minimalistic and natural approach in this design.

HOK’s Salvador Dali Museum - Florida

Extreme weather was a key consideration for trustees of the Salvador Dali Museum of St. Petersburg, Florida, where storm warnings previously meant the actual removal of the entire collection from the site to a secure location. Fortunately, the appointment of HOK to more than double the Dali’s facility to 67,000 square feet also meant acquiring the structural expertise of firm design director Yann Weymouth, who worked alongside I.M. Pei to create the glass pyramid at Paris’s Musee du Louvre.

Shift - Apollo architects and associates

'shift' by japanese firm apollo architects and associates is a two-storey family dwelling located on the outskirts of tokyo. Builded around a central courtyard, the inward-facing house consists of two offset volumes stacked on one another, separating the communal spaces from the private.

Much like the drastic contrast in atmosphere between the exterior and the interior, the two volumes are treated in contrasting materials to display a different sense of mass. The base is constructed of exposed concrete, engrained with a texture that mimics japanese cedar; the second volume consists of wood construction finished in a lightly-reflective photocatalytic paint.
